Club Competitions History

Llewellyn Cup

Mr J H Llewellyn presented this cup in 1923 on behalf of his family who were well-known Milford Haven business people running a pharmacists shop in Hamilton Terrace.

Alford Cup

This cup is one of the oldest competitions in the club first being played for in 1927. Mr C H Bird won the first bogey competition. Mr Stanley Alford who was a local fishmonger presented it to the club. It was originally played for in the club’s open week

Fishing News Cup

The proprietors of the Fishing News which was a weekly newspaper giving all the details of boats landing and fish prices throughout Great Britain presented this cup. The cup was first played for in 1927 and was won by Mr Harry Stevens. This is a medal competition with a maximum handicap of 20.

J. D. Clark Cup

Mr Clark who was a fishmonger and a member the club presented this cup to the club.  First played for in 1931 gent’s medal competition played annually for handicaps up to 15.

Marconi Trophy

The Marconi Radio & Electrical Company of London gave the trophy to the club in 1936.  G.T. Kelway won it in its first year.

Ritchie Cup:

This medal competition for gents with a handicap of 16 and over was first played for in 1947.

S. Lewis Challenge Cup

Gents medal competition played annually for handicaps of16 plus. It was first played for in 1952 and was won by Mr T H Scott.

Docks v Town Challenge Shield

The Gourock Ropework Company Ltd presented this shield in 1958.  This annual match was played between the dockworkers and the club members, when the number of members on the docks reduced it were changed to all members who had any contact with the docks and the waterways including the oil refineries against the club. This match is played to end the golf season.

Presidents Putter

Mr Bert Tully who was the club’s president from 1940to 1965 inclusive presented this putter to the club in 1960.  The winner of the first competition was Mr W G Rees. 

Mumby-croft Club Championship Cup

Mr Fred Mumby-Croft who was a fish buyer from the Hull area presented the Challenge Cup, which is the true name of the cup, to the club. Mr Fred Mumby-Croft had been invited to play golf with the club in Ireland. He had such an excellent time that he presented the club with the cup and was used for the Club Championship.  It was first played for in 1962 and was won by Mr Tom Stockwood, who also won it the following year in 1963.  The competition is a scratch medal played over 36 holes.

Peggy Darlington Salver

This salver was presented by Peggy Darlington’s mother Mrs Mary Darlington in 1965 and is played as a annual knock out mixed Greensomes foursomes

Matchplay Cup

This was first played for in 1967 and was won by Mr Tom Stockwood.

Mr Dick Shiel former professional of the club presented the original cup but was replaced by the Executive Committee at a later date.

Brer Rabbit Trophy

Mr M G Lilwall who was the under manager of Lloyds bank and former Captain and Treasurer of the club presented this trophy to the club in 1967 for gents with a handicap of 16 and over and is played it for annually.  J. Lafferty was the first winner of this trophy. This trophy is played in conjunction with the Scard Trophy.

Hackin Smith Salvers

These salvers were presented to the club in 1968 by Mr Hackin& Mrs Norah Smith in their lifetime and were originally played for as a mixed greensomes

in Milford Haven Golf Club open week and then later as a club competition from 1990 onwards. P Ryder and A. Thomas were the first winners.

Tom Stockwood Cup

Mr Tom Stockwood a life member of the club presented this cup to the club. The cup was first played for in 1968 as part of the clubs open week.  It was later played as a club competition but was reverted back to an open competition in 1997 when the club re-introduced their open week. The format is a stableford competition.

Bateman Trophy

This trophy was presented in 1968 by the Bateman Catering Organisation who was the catering contractors at all the oil refineries. All employees of the oil refineries who are not members of Milford Haven Golf Club are allowed to play for the trophy in a stableford competition with a max H/C of 20.This Trophy Format was changed in 2002 and is used in the open week for the Texas Scramble Open Day.

Scard Trophy

Mr John Scard, a well-known businessman in the Milford Haven, presented this trophy. Mr Scard owned and ran cinemas, which included The Plaza at Neyland The Palace Robert Street, The Astoria in Charles Street both in Milford Haven.  The trophy, which is agents Bogey competition, was first played for in 1968.

The format of this cup was changed in season 2004 to a Stableford Competition for handicaps 0-15 and to be played in conjunction with the Brer Rabbit 16-28 and will be played on the same day as the Club’s Past Captains Competition all off Yellow Tees.

Brian Thomas Invitation Cup

This cup was presented in memory of Mr Brian Thomas a well- known garage proprietor of the Nelson garage also a well-known local character.  This competition is always played near to the end of the season in September for members and guests. It was first played for in 1971 and it was won by B.W.F. and R.L. Blockwell.

George Hamilton Shield

Mrs Ann Hamilton presented this shield to the club in memory of her husband who was tragically killed when the Cleddau Bridge collapsed.

The shield was first played for in 1971 

Pro's Tray

This competition was first played for in 1971 when the tray was presented by the then Club Professional Mr Dick Shiel.  The tray was played for up until the departure from the club of Mr Shiel and was revived in the early 90’s when Milford Haven Golf Club re-employed a Club Professional.

Club v Combined Services

This was formerly known as the Navy Shield and first played for in 1973. When the number of ex Navy Servicemen decreased it was changed to the Combined Services at the end of the 1980’s. This is an annual match played between the club and all ex service members to mark the start of the new season. 

Russell Baynham Shield

Mrs P.M. Baynham presented this shield in memory of her husband Russell who was a well-known sportsman in the area. The shield was first played for in 1975 and is a medal competition with a max H/C of 20.

Harold Wood ford Foursomes Tankards

These tankards were presented by the many friends in memory of Mr Harold Wood ford and are played annually in late October.  It was first played for in 1975.

A. Arnold and A John Cup

This cup was presented by Mr Alfie Arnold, a former scrap merchant from Johnston and Mr Albert John of Milford haven who was part of the John brothers (builders).  Alfie and Albert played a lot of golf together thus providing the cup, which is a four ball better ball stableford competition with a max.  H/C of 28 with an allowance of 3/4.  The cup was first played for in 1976.

Gareth Jones Memorial Cup

Mrs Bronwen Jones donated this cup in memory of her husband who was a former secretary of the club.  The cup was first played for in 1979.  The competition is played annually with a tiger - rabbit stableford competition. Also in memory of her late husband Mrs Bronwen Jones also donated the clock hanging in the Board Room Bar to the club.

Fred Dytor Trophy

His wife Maureen in memory of her husband who was a businessman in the town presented the trophy.  The trophy was first played for in 1980 and is a medal competition with a maximum handicap of 20.

Past Captain's Barclays Plate

The bank presented this silver plate in 1980 to be played as a stableford competition off the yellow tees for previous captains of the club. Present captain of the club can play but cannot win the plate.

Colin Davies Scratch Medal Shield

This trophy was presented by the Neyland Golfing Society in memory of Colin who passed away in 1981 at the age of 49. Colin, who beside being a very good single figure golfer excelled at all ball games, being captain of Neyland Cricket 1st and 2nd eleven teams for many years and also represented Pembrokeshire at county level. Colin was first choice goalkeeper for Pembroke Boro' Welsh League team before playing for Hakin Utd' Pembrokeshire League side, again as goalkeeper and as the old fashioned centre-half.  After retiring from football he played rugby for Neyland.  Colin was also a very good badminton, table tennis, tennis and snooker player. Colin was respected throughout the county for his sporting prowess and was well liked by all who played with him and against him. The trophy was first played for in 1982 and is awarded to the player with the lowest gross score of the day.

Neyland Golfing Society Trophy

Mrs Violet Lloyd of Carnforth presented this trophy in memory of her husband Charles Lloyd.  Charlie as his old friends knew him was born in Neyland and was the main sponsor of the Neyland Golf Society for many years.  The trophy is to be played in conjunction with the Colin Davies trophy and is awarded to the best nett score of the day with a maximum handicap of 24.  it was first played for in 1998 with the winner being Dave Humphreys.

Midland Bank Scratch Shield

This shield was presented by the Midland Bank in 1984. This is a match-play scratch knockout competition consisting of the top 16 of the club championship.

Veterans Trophy

Mr John Tully in memory of his father Mr Bert Tully who was club captain in 1932, 1949 and 1959 and also president of the club from 1940 to 1965 inclusive donated this trophy.  Mr John Tully was also a former captain of the club in 1958 and president from 1981 to 1983.  The trophy was first played for in 1984.

Brian Bebb Shield

Presented by Mrs Angela Bebb In memory of her husband Brian who was a former captain of the club.  The shield is for the player who have accumulated the most points in medal rounds over the year, 10pts for first, 9 for 2nd and so on up to 10th place It was first played for in 1986 and was won by Alan Procter

Medal Championship Shield

Mr M L Rees a well-known single figure local golfer and former captain of the club presented this to the club in 1986.  The competition is for the qualifiers of all medals rounds played in the year.

James Williams Trophy

This trophy was presented by the Directors of the company in 1988 and is played annually as Gents knockout four-ball better ball.

Under 50's Shield

This shield was donated by the club and first played for in 1991 and is always to be played in conjunction with the Veteran’s Trophy.

Fisherman's Tribute

Mr Alan Hawthorn, a former captain and treasurer of the club, presented this trophy in April 1993 in memory of all the lost fishermen in the area.  This trophy is a replica of the statue situated on the Rath in Milford Haven

Cleddau Insurance Services Knock Out Cup

This cup was presented by the directors of Cleddau Insurances in 1995 and is played for by the members of the club with handicaps of 16-28 inclusive.

Ardent and Old Warrior Cup

This competition was formerly the Ardent Shield, which had been presented to the club by the officers of HMS Ardent, the adopted ship of Milford Haven. HMS Ardent, a frigate, was launched in 1975 and was destroyed in the Falklands War on the 21st May 1982 with the loss of 22 lives. The Ardent shield was originally played for as a 3-club competition up to 1994 when the shield went missing. In 1995 the club was presented with the present cup by the R.A.O.B Neyland Lodge and named the Ardent & Old Warrior Cup when the format was changed to a flag competition. The format of this trophy was changed in season 2004 to a Chapman’s Foursomes Stableford.

Nicholas Scratch Cup

Presented by Mr Alan Nicholas in 1997 for the best Twelve gross scores in medal rounds from April to October each season. The winner of the Cup the first year was John Dyble.

Millennium Cup:

Presented by millennium club captain Mr George Davies. The format for the cup is for the total best eight nett scores in the 12 monthly medals.  The winner in the first year was Ivor Mckenzie.

 

Ladies Competitions History

Jamieson Cup

 

First played for in 1924 and was presented by Mr. Jamieson, a founder member of The Club.  He was the proprietor of a drapery and furnishing business on the corner of Priory Road and Charles Street.

Alford Cup

First played for in 1928 and was presented by the Alford families. Mr. P. Alford, a wholesale fish merchant was a founder member of The Club in 1913.

Noremac Bowl

First played for in 1968 and was presented by Don and Joan Noremac in memory of their son Robin who lost his life in a road accident.

George Clarke Club

First played for in 1984 and was presented by life member Joyce Clarke in memory of her father who was a founder member in 1913.  The then assistant professional T.G. Hughes who lost his life in the Second World War made the club.

Joyce Clarke Spoons

First played for in 1994 and was presented in memory of Miss Clarke by her family. The spoons are replicas given for winning monthly medals.

Doris Stockwood Cup

First played for in 1951 and was presented by club member Doris Stockwood. It is a 9 holes teaching cup.  One 36-handicap player plus an experienced player as an advisor.

Marjorie Harvey Cup

First played for in 1979 and was presented by club member Marjorie Harvey for handicaps 26 – 36.

Nantucket Cup

First played for in 1996 and was presented by club members Joan & Glyn Gale for handicaps 0 – 25 and played in conjunction with the Marjorie Harvey Cup.  The cup was named after Joan & Glyn’s place of residence (Nantucket Avenue which, in turn was named after the island of Nantucket from which the whaling families came to Milford Haven.

Rookery Nook

First played for in 1953 and was presented by Mr. James, the then owner of the Milford Haven Laundry.  Rookery Nook was the name of Mr. James’ house. The cup is awarded to the winner of the most medal competitions during the period of April to September inclusive.

Lyncroft Trophy

First played for in 1968 and was presented by Eileen and Jim Sharples for a par (bogey) competition and named after their home.

Past Captains trophy

First played for in 1989 and was presented by life member Arthur Elder for a Stapleford Competition. The current Ladies Captain can compete but cannot win the trophy.

Norah Smith Salvers

First played for in 1989.  Life member Norah Smith bequeathed money to the Ladies Section. The Salvers were purchased for a Foursome Competition and a seat was purchased at the first tee.

Esso Cup

First played for in 1982 and was presented by The Esso Oil Caompany prior to th closure of the refinery. Awarded to the leading Milford Haven member at the annual Ladies’ open day.

Brian Warlow Shield

First played for in 1992 and was presented by Mr. Brian Warlow, Head Greenkeeper of the club for 25 years an who retired in January 2003.

Birdie Tree

First played for in 1989 and was presented by Mrs. Alice Wright in her Captain’s Year. It is won by the player scoring the most birdies in the year.

Club Champion

First played for in 1984 and was presented by The Ladies Section.  It is a Matchplay Competition and is played off scratch.  The best 8 gross scores in a qualifying round (one of the medal rounds) are placed in order of the automatic draw.

Webber Cup

First played for in 1946 and was presented by Sir. Robert Webber of the “Western mail” who was the Ladies President in 1938.

Tully Cup

First played for in 1950 and was presented by Mrs. Lillian Tully who was a Captain and President of the ladies section.

 

Junior Competitions History

Old Warrior Lodge

This cup was presented to the Junior Section by the Neyland Old Warrior Lodge in 1984 and is played as a Adult &Junior Greensomes medal competition and is played off the Yellow tees this competition do not allow a father and son to play together. The handicap limit is Juniors 36 and Adults 24  

W.S. Brown Cup

This cup was first played for in 1986 for the Junior Club Championship.  When the cup went missing in the 1990’s it was replaced by Mr W S Brown a former captain of the club and secretary of the club from 1997 to 2006.

Skomer Cup

This cup was first played for in 1990 as a winter league competition were a certain amount of tournaments are used where the winner is allocated 10 pts, 2nd 8 pts, 3rd 6pts, 4th 4pts, 5th 2pts, 6th 1 pts and the player with the most points at the end of the league will be the winner. In the event of a tie, the player with the most wins will be declared the winner, if still equal followed by the best placings.

There is no information available on who donated this cup to the junior section.

Midland Bank Trophy

This trophy was presented to the junior section in 1990 by Mr Howard Griffiths the Midland bank manager who was also a former captain of Milford Haven Golf Club and when leaving the district and moving to the Tenby area he also captained the Tenby Golf Club.  This trophy is played for as a summer league competition were a certain amount of tournaments are used where the winner is allocated 10 pts, 2nd 8 pts, 3rd 6pts, 4th 4pts, 5th 2pts, 6th 1 pts and the player with the most points at the end of the league will be the winner.  In the event of a tie, the player with the most wins will be declared the winner, if still equal followed by the best placings. 

Elf Shield

This Shield was presented to the junior section in 1990 by the Elf Oil Refinery and is played between the junior section and Haverfordwest Golf Club junior section on a home and away basis with the overall results in a match play competition decides the winner.  The shield is held at winners club for that year.

Knockout Cup

This cup is played for as the Junior Knockout match play competition and was first

Played for in 1995 no other information is available on who presented the cup to the junior section.

Variety Club of Great Britain Shield

Mr Jim Hughes who was a Chief Barker presented this shield to the junior section on behalf of the Variety Club of Great Britain. This is a stableford competition open to all the junior section and was first played for in 1996.

Mike Jones Putter

Mr Mike Jones of M.J.  Motors a well-known garage proprietor and club member presented this putter to the junior section in 1996.  This is a medal competition played for by all the junior section.

Haven Fuels Shield

Mr David Tully a well-known businessperson and club member presented this shield in 1996 to the junior section and whose father and grandfather was both former captains and presidents of the club.  Juniors, who have a handicap of 19 plus play for this shield.

D.R. Griffiths Cup

Mr Roy Griffiths former captain and president of the club presented this cup to the junior section in 1996.  The entire junior section members who have a handicap of 36 or less play for this cup as medal competition.

Lloyd Motors Cup

This cup was originally presented to the club by Lloyds garage of Neyland. When the garage closed in 1995 the cup was passed onto the junior section to be played for as a medal competition by all the junior section members who has a handicap of 36 or less and first played for in 1996.

B.D.S. Shield

Mr Alan & Mr Brian Summons well-known local businessmen and club members donated this shield to the junior section in 1996.  This shield is played in a stableford competition for junior members with handicaps of 19- 36 inclusive.

R.A.F. Brawdy Cup

The club members of R.A.F. Brawdy against Milford Haven Golf Club originally played for this cup but when Brawdy closed in the late 1980’s the cup was no longer contested. In 1996 the cup was passed onto the junior section and is now played as a medal competition for junior members with handicaps of 19-36 inclusive.

Gulf Oil Shield

Gulf Oil Refinery prior to closing presented this shield to the junior section in 1996 and is played for annually for all juniors with handicaps of 0-36 as a medal competition.

C.E.F. Shield

Mr Miguel Rodriguez former Club Captain of Milford Haven and local manager of City Electrics Factors presented this shield to the junior section in 1996 and is played as a stableford competition for all junior members with a handicap of 0–36.

C.E.F. Salver

This salver was also presented by Mr Rodriguez in 1998 and is played as a medal competition for junior members with handicaps of 0-36 inclusive.

Wesleyan Financial Services

This cup was presented by Mr Owain Picton a former captain of the club in 1996 and used as the overall stableford winner of the Annual Junior Open day

The Moore Cup

Mr Terry & Mrs Elaine Moore presented this cup to the junior section in 1998 and are played for as a stableford competition by all the juniors with handicap of 0-36.

Mr &Mrs Moore who was formerly licensees of local public houses before taking over the post of the golf club steward and catering manager respectively in 1999.

Peter Harries Family Cup

Mr Peter Harries well knew local person, former Captain & President of Milford Haven Golf Club also President of the Dyfed Golfing Union.  This cup was presented to the junior section in 1998 and is played annually as Chapman foursomes with juniors and any relative playing golf at Milford Haven (i.e. parent, aunty, uncle, etc.)

Pater Cup

The Pater Jewellers of Pembroke Dock presented this cup to the junior section and was first played for in 2001.  Junior and adults play off the yellow tees with no father and son combination it is played as a greensomes medal.

Junior Golfer of The Year

Mr T & Mrs E. Moore first presented this trophy to the junior section in 1998

And is presented to the most improved Junior Golfer of the year which is decided by the Junior Organisers.

Clawsafe Cup

This cup was first known as the friendship cup and was presented by Mrs Violet Lloyd of Carnforth in Lancashire.  It was played for between the Neyland Golfing Society and Milford haven Golf Club.  When this competition stopped being played, permission was given in 2001 to change the cup to be named the Clawsafe Cup. This was the name of the scaffolding company which Mrs Lloyd and her late husband Mr Charles Lloyd who were both directors of the company, Mr Lloyd was a native of Neyland. The cup was to be played for as a stableford competition involving all the junior section that have handicaps of 36 or less and will be played for the first time in 2002.

Barry Davies Trophy

Mr Barry Davies who was a well known local carpenter and a member of Milford Haven Golf Club, in 2001 he offered this trophy to the junior section to be played for as a stableford competition for all the juniors that have a handicap of 36 or less.  The trophy will be played for the first time in2002.

Ford Trophy

This trophy was played for the first time by the junior section in 2002 that have a handicap of 36 or less and will be played as a stableford competition.  This trophy was surplus to use and presented to the junior section in 2001.
