Junior Section
This year’s annual Pembrokeshire v County Wexford Junior golf match for the Mayoral Cup took place at Newport Links golf course on Monday/ Tuesday16th & 17th August. This is the 16th year the match has taken place and was started by the late Alan Scott of Haverfordwest golf club along with Adrian Doyle the County Wexford Development officer in 1995 and is now run by Nigel Roberts junior organiser of the Milford Haven golf club.
This year unfortunately Pembrokeshire were unable to field the usual team of 24 being only able to raise 16 players ten of whom came from Milford haven golf club. In true sportsman tradition the Count of Wexford Junior organiser’s John Meyler & Paddy Dore agreed to match the 16.
On the first day a 4 Ball Better Ball stableford competition was played with one player from each team playing as a team. The winners with a score pf 50 points were Michael Ryan from Wexford and Jack Cooper from Pembrokeshire, the runners up were Robert Whelan of Wexford and Nathan Rees from Pembrokeshire with 48 points.
On the second day the single matches took place with the Pembrokeshire team Captained by Hayden Mathias of Newport Links golf club playing off a handicap of 4, the Pembrokeshire team was victorious by 9 matches to 7; this is only the 3rd time in 15 years that Pembrokeshire have overcome their strong Irish counterparts.
A big thank you goes to Newport Links golf club for hosting the event and a special thank you to Sarah & Richard Hearne of Pembrokeshire Canteen Services for their sponsorship towards the running of this year’s event.
The juniors with handicaps of 19+ played a stableford competition for the Bryan Millward Trophy last Saturday September 4th

R.A.O.B. Charity Day
Pictured are the winners in the R.A.O.B charity day held at the club on Sunday August 29th along with Club Captain Gareth Phillips; Tracey Price (Mind) and main organiser of the day Ken Davies.
On a bright but breezy day over 100 golfers took part in the annual R.A.O.B.charity day.
The B-B-Q on the 10th was again a great success; the only problem was getting the golfers to move on!!
The competition was a Texas scramble medal round for teams of three.
Some great scores were returned on the day with the winning teams being;
1st ‘Bucks fizz' (M Buckingham, P Fowler, M Beavis) Net score of 52.6
2nd 2 Scuds and a player (A Williams, L. Brome, A Powles) Net 55.4
3rd Pembrokeshire Canteen Services (M. Hearne, M Summons, and M. Williams) Net 57.2
4th Warwick Hunt (A. Summons, J.Skelhorn, A Youds) Net 57.4
Nearest the pin on the par 4 5th hole (second shot) was Ken Davies; Liam Eva (who’s drive Ken took) tried to claim half the prize but was told in no uncertain terms 'Unlucky'.
The £5000 pound on offer for a hole in one on the 16th went begging again as the contrary wind played havoc with club selection on this difficult hole. The Club Captains heart was in his mouth for a few seconds but in the end his effort remained short.
The holidays in Portugal and at the Belfry also remained in the pot for next year as the other par threes survived all the players’ attempts at a hole in one.
Thanks to our many sponsors over £2500 was raised on the day.
The presentation and evening function went well with a cheque for £1000 being presented to Tracy Price (Director of Pembrokeshire Mind). Tracy spoke for a few moments about the work that Pembrokeshire Mind carries out in the local community.
Remaining monies in the kitty will be distributed on an as requested / needed basis during the year.
Many; many thanks to all our sponsors on the day, without whom this event could not take place.
These include:-
M.H.G.C (use of the course);
South Hook LNG
B.D.S;
SeaBird Exploration
Semi Logistics
The Harbourmaster
Mark Davies
The Brock family
Many thanks to the many other individual sponsors who donated prizes for the raffle.
Thanks also to the 'team on the eighth hole (Birchie, Timmy, Alison and Barry). How they managed to cook a full Sunday dinner, in between cooking and serving over 100 burgers, chickens and steaks, on a BBQ amazed all the golfers.
