Seniors Section

On Thursday May 8th the seniors section held a stableford roll up which was also a qualifier for Colin Reynolds points, 28 competitors took part on a dry but very windy day which affected the scores.  The best score of the day was Ray Andrews with 34 points beating David Britton on the back nine score.

In the two’s competition only three two’s were registered by Alan Morris; Gareth Rees and Owain Picton.

The top of the leader board for the Colin Reynolds Salvers are George Lawrence 11 points; David Britton 7 points; plus five other seniors with six points each.

On Thursday May 15th the seniors will travel to Tenby golf club to play the Tenby seniors section in their annual friendly match.

Men’s Section

On Sunday May 4th the club travelled to Aberystwyth to play in the Jeff Harries foursomes knock out cup the result was a home win for Aberystwyth by the odd match in seven. Once again the mist came in from the sea and at one time thought the match was to be called off as one of the Milford players got lost but turned up like the film” Gorillas in the Mist”

On bank holiday Monday May 5th the rearranged Gareth Jones Trophy was held, this competition is  the combined stableford scores of Tiger and Rabbit playing together with the winners being Mark and Brian Summons 75 points; 2nd Paul and Liam Eva 73 points with Mike Durward and Jim Kirkpatrick in 3rd place with 68 points.

On Saturday May 10th the club played the May monthly medal which was sponsored by Neil Adams of the Huntsman Public House in Rosemarket. The weather was overcast with light drizzle for the early morning starters with no wind for a change, the afternoon turned out to be very warm and sunny being the hottest day of the year so far, I hope this is not our summer.  Nearly ninety players took part, the highest number of competitors for a competition this year. The course was once again in excellent condition which resulted in some good golf being played. This competition was a qualifier for Brian Bebb points and the Nicholas’s scratch cup.

The winner with an excellent nett 67 was Ian Randell with junior player Elliott Harding winning the best gross with a fine 73.

In the Brian Bebb shield with Ian Randell gaining 10 points he moves into joint third place. Leaders are Andrew Arnold 25 points; Nathan Day 22; Ian Randell; Gareth Phillips on 20points.

In the two’s competition Fifteen players had seventeen two’s between them, each two was worth £5.00 credit in the pro shop, see list of winners in gents locker room.

Super Six

Milford Haven super six team had an excellent win at Tenby in their first match of the season by four matches to two, with three wins two halves and only one match lost.

Tigers Section

Milford Haven tigers played Haverfordwest golf club tigers at home on Sunday May 11th in the first division of the Dyfed Golfing Union, after winning their away match at Haverfordwest by 7 matches to 2 this time they went one better by winning 8 matches to 1 (seven wins and two halves) taking their points tally in the league in the three matches which they have played (two away one home) to 33 points. Congratulations to Steve Youds for obtaining his first half point in the league in three outings.

Both teams had players away with Milford having their three lowest handicaps unavailable, Jason Edwards and Emlyn Williams who were playing for Dyfed at Glynhir golf club against Glamorgan and RJ Roberts and Chris Day unable to play.

Ladies Section

LGU/Rookery Nook

The competition played was the LGU/Rookery Nook. Barbara Phillips won with a nett 74 with Jackie Skelhorn coming second with a nett 75.

On Sunday May 4th a Golf Union of Wales’s qualifying competition for the Challenge bowls

The finals of the Challenge bowls  and medals will be played at Morriston golf club June 5th when Barbara Phillips will compete in the Gold Medal(qualified 2007) and Silver Bowl and as result that Denise cannot play in the finals Cheryl Eva will compete in the Silver Medal (qualified 2007) and the Bronze Bowl

The ladies Tuesday competition held on Tuesday May 6th when only eleven ladies took part.

Junior Section

In the rearranged competition for the R.A.O.B. trophy held on Sunday May 4th ten pairs of juniors and adults playing a greensomes medal played, the winners  being Andrew Rees and Nathan Rees with nett 62.8 with John Dyble and Michael Boulton in runners up spot.

On Saturday May 10th the sub juniors played a stableford competition for the Haven Shield.

Old Friends Charity Day

A very successful Old Friends Charity Day was held at MHGC on Friday 2nd May.  The weather was warm and the course was superb with the rebuilt greens all in play. Around 80 members and guests played and raised a staggering £1,800 for donations to the RNLI (Hakin Point Branch), Arthritis Research, Macmillan Cancer, and Wales Air Ambulance Charities.

Organised by Mike Edds and a few volunteers, it was a very enjoyable event and a big thank you must go to the following people and organisations, because without their help and generosity it would not have been such a success

Arthur Arran, Club Captain for presenting the prizes and Owain Picton for organising the score cards, the prize table and raffle.

Kevin Rawlings and his Greens Staff for their help and for the excellent condition and presentation of the course. The Executive Committee and in particular Keith John9previous chairman of greens) and John Nicholas (present chairman of greens) can be very proud of their achievement and efforts in what has been a very difficult few years. It really is fantastic to have our golf course back!

The Stewardess, Janette and, bar staff along with David and his catering staff for their hard work on a very busy day.

Dave Tully for arranging ice for a wee drink on the 10th, Kathy Knight for organising many of the raffle prizes and Sue from Flowers and Favours for floral displays in the clubhouse.

The Winning Team prize was donated by Brian Taylor of Travis Perkins, the individual prizes given by Crown Timber and Sue Reynolds, Flowers and Favours and the two Nearest the Pin prizes by The Price family and John Nicholas of Davies Builders Supplies.

Money Donations were received from the B.P. Andrew Platform, Firwood Timber Frame and Len Williams.

Chris Davies has also pledged some of the proceeds from the recent Austwel Charity Day as Dicky Knight has again been able to arrange match funding from B.P. for us to double up one of our donations to charity.

Raffle prizes raised nearly £400 and were donated by numerous members and guests who brought prizes on the day and the following local businesses:-

The final event of the evening was an auction raising nearly £700

The main items sold came from Brian and Alan Summons who generously gave a unique Tiger Woods photograph and plaque to be auctioned together with other Augusta National Golf memorabilia, from their recent visit to The Masters.

Mr Brian Taylor, from Travis Perkins also donated another 4 ball voucher on the National course at the Vale of Glamorgan.

Once again a big thank you, the day is all about Old Friends of Milford Haven Golf Club meeting, having some fun, remembering those members no longer with us and raising money to go towards some needy local charities.

We just might have to do it all again next year!

Steynton Open Day

The annual Steynton Golf Tournament open day will be held once again at Milford Haven Golf Club on Bank Holiday Monday; May 26th. The competition is a stableford with the first tee time at 10.00am; entry forms are available from Chris Pettit or behind the bar at the club.

Golf Beginners Mornings

The Milford Haven golf club will be holding free golf beginners’ mornings under the guidance of Matthew Hearne the club’s assistant professional.

The beginners session will be held for ladies and junior girls on this coming Sunday May 18th from 10.30 – 12.00; the ladies section will be assisting Mathew on this day, if any lady or juniors are interested in trying or taking up golf please contact Matthew on 01646697762 or call into the professional shop for further details or just turn up on the day, all ages are welcomed.

Charity Quiz

The next charity quiz will be held in the club lounge on Thursday May 22nd at 7.30 pm for members and their guests in teams of three or four players, entry is £1.00 per player.

Pro-am Competition

Matthew Hearne and Gareth Phillips who played in the pro-am regional final at Cardiff golf club on Friday May 9th scored a nett 73; the winning pair had a nett 62, the competition was a four ball better ball medal.

Seniors Section

On Thursday May 1st the seniors section entertained Cardigan Golf club seniors in their friendly match, the weather was dry starting off, with a just one shower of rain to freshen the course up during the match.  After the very heavy rain over the last few days the course was in excellent condition with the new greens looking in superb condition.  The result of the match was a win for Cardigan seniors by five and a half matches to three and a half, with Bert Jones and Dom Gianuzzi; Billy Hier and Ken Roper and with John Birch (playing his first seniors match )with Winston Price winning their matches, Owain Picton and Geoff Davies obtaining a half.

In the Seniors South Wales Classic the god’s have been lucky for the “A” team having another home draw match  against the Rhondda golf club.

On Thursday May 8th the seniors will be playing a stableford competition which will be a qualifier for Colin Reynolds points. First draw will be at 11.00 am.

Old Friends Day

Pictured are some of the winners in the Old Friends Charity day held at Milford Haven golf club on Friday May 3rd.

On Friday May 2nd the annual Old Friends charity day organised by Mike Edds and his volunteer helpers to raise money for various charities. On an excellent day for golf with the course at its best; eighty golfers played and donated money to various charities.  The main sponsor of the day was Travis Perkins who donated two prizes of a round of golf for four people at the Vale of Glamorgan national course. A further report of the day will appear in next week’s weekly news.

John and Jean Winter Shield

On Saturday Milford Haven Golf Club entertained Haverfordwest Golf Club in the return leg of the John & Jean Winter Shield, being nine games to four down after the first leg Milford faced an uphill task. The team performed marvellously to pull back the deficit and overtake Haverfordwest by winning 11 games to 2 and winning 15-11 overall. The match was played in the usual great spirit and with many matches going to the last hole, the result was in doubt for some time.

During his speech whilst presenting the Shield, Haverfordwest's Captain Glyn Griffith congratulated Milford on their win & praised the greens staff at Milford for a course presented in such magnificent condition.

Steynton Open Day

On Sunday April 27th the ladies section played for the Brian Warlow shield, this competition was a stableford using four clubs and a putter.

The ladies Tuesday competition on April 29th was called off because of the very heavy rain it allowed the ladies to do their housework.

Golf Beginners Mornings

The Milford Haven golf club will be holding two free golf beginners’ mornings under the guidance of Matthew Hearne the club’s assistant professional.

The first morning session will be held this Sunday May 11th for Male players and junior boys; from 10.30 to 12.00.

Free Golf Day

Milford Haven Golf Club will be holding free day golf’s competition for the second year for all full visiting members of golf club’s who are affiliated to the Dyfed Golfing Union.  This day will take place on Wednesday May 21st tee times available from 09.00 to 14.00 with presentation at 18.30

The day will be an individual stableford with prizes in both sections of 0-14 and 15-28, with prizes of 1st £25.00;2nd £15.00; 3rd £10.00 in the form of pro shop vouchers.  There will be prizes for the nearest the pin on holes 6 (Badgers) and 16 (The Gales). Longest drive on the 18th Hole sponsored by Mr Len Williams.

Visiting players taking part must provide proof of membership of their home club before going out to play.

Food will be available all day at a reasonable price.

Rabbits Section

The rabbits section has not made a very good start to the season in the first division of the Three Counties League, having lost the first match away at Carmarthen golf club they have gone on to lose their first home match to Tenby golf club on Sunday April 27th by five matches to four.
