MHGC Dyfed League First Division Champions 2023

The Tigers team went into this years season feeling very optimistic given a successful season last year finishing 3rd behind 2nd placed Glynhir and 2022 Champions Haverfordwest.

The season could not have started any better.  Travelling to both Carmarthen and Machynys away two excellent results were achieved, winning the games 5.5 to 2.5 and 6.5 to 1.5 respectively.

Next the team travelled to Glynhir.  Once again the team manged to get a great result, with the final 2 games winning the result was a half.

Off to a brilliant start, 2 away wins and an away half it couldn’t have been much better.

The next game was the first home game of the season, Haverfordwest, last years Champions. This was always going to be a tough game but the boys battled through eventually winning the game 5.5 to 2.5.  However the result could have easily gone the other way as 3 of the games won on the last hole and all the other games finished on the 17th, a very tight match but a good result.

South Pembs were next at home, the team had a great result winning the game 8 to 0.

The team then travelled away to Haverfordwest which was always going to be a tough game at our local rivals and last years champions.  The result was a mirror image of the result at home, with a 5.5 to 2.5 loss, again with the majority of the games finishing on the 17th and 18th holes.  This turned out to be the only league game that the team lost in the league this year.

Next up was Glynhir and Machynys at home.  Once again the boys produced 2 excellent results, bringing home 2 wins, winning 5 to 3 and 7.5 to 0.5 respectively.

The teams final away game was away to South Pembs who were newly promoted into the first division. Once again the boys performed achieving a well earned half.

The final game of the season was Carmarthen home.  Due to the incredible results throughout the year Carmarthen were the only team that could close the gap in the table and in order to do this they needed to beat us at home. The boys achieved another great result winning the match 6.5 to 2.5.  This meant that even though other teams had a number of games remaining MHGC total points of 82 could not be beaten.

Congratulations MHGC Tigers, Dyfed League first division champions once again.

The team are extremely proud of 3 of our juniors who represented MHGC throughout the season. Oliver King who played every game, Lucas Aldred and Bobby Jenkins.  The Tigers team have always had a good junior representation which is very important for its future. There was no better evidence than this as throughout the season the team consisted of 6 previous junior members of the club and in the final game of the year this was exceeded with 8 previous junior members in the team of 16.  This just goes to show how important the junior section is to the clubs future success.

The Tigers also took part in the Dyfed League Jeff Harris knock out Cup.  After beating Tenby away in the first round the team had a home draw against Borth.  This game was conceeded to MHGC which put the team straight through to the semi final.

The semi final was played against South Pembs at Trefloyne as the semi final and final are played on neutral venues  Unfortunately the boys lost 5 to 2 to a very strong South Pembs side.  This is the only Dyfed trophy that MHGC have yet to win but it will come one day.

The team would like to thank everyone for their support and encouragement throughout the year.  To Bev and Anna for the after dinner meals and to Zac and his green staff for the presentation of the course.

Some of the team will be heading of to the Dyfed County dinner in October representing MHGC for the presentation of the shield and I’m sure a few drinks, there is even mention of an overnight stay!!

Well done MHGC Tigers, a great year, here’s looking forward to defending the title in 2024.
